The platypus is a very strange animal. Found only in Australia, when you look at one, it appears to have been cobbled together from spare parts of other animals. Yet, despite it's odd appearance, the platypus has managed to do pretty well for itself, having survived as a species, relatively unchanged for the last 110 million years. The platypus predates and managed to out survive the dinosaurs, which begs the question of how is it that nature managed to favor such a strange, tiny animal for so long?
